ALBERT KEI NO REIJOU: VOLUME 2 CHAPTER 6
note: this is edited mtl!!
“...And, Gainas-sama was so terrible. During the party he was distracted the entire time…”
Under Parfait’s dissatisfied gaze, Mary elegantly sipped her black tea and remarked, “Oh my, how dreadful.”
The cafeteria was the same as usual today. Although the seasons had changed, today as always, Lillianne sat in a corner surrounded by her reverse harem and the envious gazes of other students. About half a year had passed since Lilianne, as well as Mary, had arrived, but the Elysiana Academy remained the same.
Still, there was some change, such as Parfait, who now openly displayed her outrage in front of Mary. Even so, there was no force behind her anger because of her cute appearance, and the tearful expression with which she glared at a specific corner of the cafeteria gave her a very innocent feeling. However, Mary would say that this was much better than when she was perpetually sobbing and cowering in fear.
"Gainas-sama and I are in a relationship arranged by our parents, but I truly do like him."
“And yet …” murmuring, Parfait looked down.
While the other was occupied with being angry and feeling down, Mary immediately replied, "Indeed.”
If you were to direct your gaze to a corner of the cafeteria without knowledge of Parfait’s thoughts on the matter, Lilianne and the men surrounding her seemed like they had built the perfect flower garden and were about to burst into song. In the game, there was even a hidden target, "the principal’s son", so the design of the game could only be said to be perfect. As she was recalling the list of characters in her memory, Mary lost track of the conversation... when suddenly Parfett called her name. Was it her inattention that caused Parfait to puff up her cheeks while staring gloomily at the reverse harem?
"What’s wrong?"
"Mary-sama, doesn’t it bother you?"
"Well, they do stand out. But isn't it you, not me, who cares about it?"
"I- I don't care at all! Whoever those people are, I have absolutely nothing to do with them!"
After saying that, Parfait turned away from her, and Mary gave a wry smile, "Of course."
Mary Albert was a character who was sent away in the previous work, and she was now just an international student who was totally irrelevant to the plot. No matter who commanded the reverse harem or who took action to prevent their fall to ruin, Mary had no interest.
But Mary had to sigh tiredly because of Lilianne and Carina’s silent monitoring of her. Lilianne, the one at the center of controversy, was the queen of the reverse harem who all the female students of the Elysiana Academy were wary of. On the other hand, there was Carina, a well-rounded noble lady who was supported by all in the school. It went without saying that, Mary, the target of two such opposing people’s gazes, naturally felt uncomfortable.
However, Mary couldn’t out herself by explaining, "I'm not related to your game!" Instead, she had to ask, “What's the matter?”
Of course, they wouldn’t say this was a game from their previous life, so they smiled at her and said, "No, it’s nothing."
What a meaningless interaction! If this were to be repeated over and over again, you couldn't help but feel disgusted.
Conversely, their vigilance towards Mary was just proof that they had been reincarnated with pre-existing memories.
But even without their wariness as proof, the way the male characters’ all quickly fell in love with Lilianne was just as if she knew the best methods to quickly and efficiently gain their affections. And as for Carina, her actions were indicative of her knowledge of her own downfall, since she noticeably strove to avoid it every day by increasing the numbers of her allies. Others noticing it was a matter of course. Rather, it made Mary wonder if they were even trying to hide it.
Mary Albert would be an unexpected person to them. The villain of the previous work that should have already retired from the stage, a person who had not met their expected downfall, and was instead on an impossible path for the game. They could not predict how she would move, or how she would affect them, and was irregular for them both.
However, Mary didn’t know why she was in Elysiana Academy either… In fact, Mary, who had been aiming for the northern land would also like to know why this had happened.
That's why Mary was tired of the suspicious eyes that kept asking her, "Why are you here?" and "Does she remember too?"
"Oh, it’s Carina and Lilianne, again."
Suddenly, Parfait turned towards them.
"It is,” Mary replied, but kept her eyes on the book at hand. It wasn’t necessary to check, because they would either quickly avert their eyes, or return an insincere smile.
"Mary-sama, are you on good terms with the two of them? Somehow, they both seem to be looking at you. It makes me worried because you're the daughter of the Albert family. Carina-san seems to be focusing on diplomacy abroad, and for Lilianne, the power of the Albert family could rob her of a man."
"Mary-sama, perhaps Gainus ...!?"
"Well, perhaps not even the Albert family could tear him away."
Mary laughed at her teasing, and Parfait pouted sulkily.
Though Mary couldn’t really laugh, since she, the daughter of the Albert family, had also had her own fiance stolen by a transfer student.
However, the one who was robbed of her fiancé by Lilianne had blown off the jokes that she might have just laughed at, or rather, "I’d rather be like Mary-sama than be robbed by Liliane!" She might even actually end up like Mary.
Mary pointed it out, but Parfait turned away, saying, "I don't know anymore!"
When Mary sighed in an expected manner, Parfett leaned over slightly and asked, "Then, Mary-sama..."
"Mary-sama, do you have a person like that?"
"Like what?"
"I really like them, and when we can't meet, all I think about is that person ..."
Unlike Parfait, who spoke with a hand to her chest, Mary wrinkled her eyebrows in confusion.
She couldn’t think of anything like that at all. In the first place, Mary originally thought that she would marry Patrick as a daughter of the Albert family. It was a prediction, not a hope, after considering each other's family affairs, but it was impossible to think "I'm free! Onto the next man!" just because the engagement was broken.
Above all, her partner was that Patrick. It would be hard to say if she could fall in love so easily anymore, because everyone would be compared against that ideal prince.
Thinking as such, Mary suddenly looked up to the person beside her, "Does anyone come to mind?” ... But her eyes only met empty space.
"Um ... Mary-sama?"
Parfait’s eyes widened at Mary's sudden action. "Is someone there?"
Needless to say, there was only an empty seat next to Mary. This behavior of Mary’s was not limited to just today, but had already been displayed several times, and each time made Parfait curiously tilt her head.
Additionally, if you looked at Mary's hand, there were two cups again today.
"Mary-sama, you know ... you’re quite eccentric."
"Oh, if you don't like it, please leave me alone."
"...th-that ..."
Just Mary’s few words from trying to hide her embarrassment made tears gather in Parfait’s eyes.
Faced yet again with the other’s ever-present weakness to rebukes, Mary panicked and said, “It was a joke, don’t pay it any mind!" In a sense, it was like the comforting words after a strong hit.
"You-you’re right. I have to be stronger ... I won’t care what you say ..."
"Well, but then again, it never really mattered what I said, it was like it went in one ear and out the other..."
"Mary-sama, what happened?"
"Hmm, before, there was a super strong commoner girl ... who splendidly scattered all attacks that were aimed at her."
When Mary remembered the past and heaved a big sigh, Parfait leaned over to ask what had happened ... but then gasped. Mary noticed and followed Parfait's line of sight, to see the reverse harem and Lilianne moving away. Amongst the group, one of them was looking in her direction.
It was none other than Gainus Eldrand, Parfait’s fiance. It may be better to use an epithet for now, though-
He looked at her, and when he noticed Mary's line of sight, he dipped his head in a light bow. Or at least it seemed so to Mary.
Parfait wasn’t looking upwards, and glancing around, there were some burning with jealousy of Lilianne's reverse harem, but no one seemed to be bowing to Gainus. So, he bowed his head at her after all. Coming upon this thought, Mary muttered quietly, “How bothersome.”
A/N: for those who want the master/servant interactions, Mary will return home next time, so please wait for a bit!
